Last time Train played a major show in O.C. — in July 2010, when “Hey, Soul Sister” was on pace to become the biggest digital song of that year — the San Francisco group attracted nearly 10,000 fans to Pacific Amphitheatre, the largest audience the venue had seen up to that point since reopening in 2003.
Not surprising, then, that frontman Pat Monahan and the band are stepping up in size for their return visit.
In mid-July, the trio, subject of a pretty hilarious spoof on last weekend’s Adam Levine-hosted edition of Saturday Night Live, will embark with their touring players from Cleveland on a nationwide tour that pulls into Irvine for a headlining turn at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on Aug. 9.
As at all other shows on the outing, Irish band the Script and singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw will open. Tickets go on sale next Friday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. Check back for prices once they become available.
The band also appears this Friday headlining VH1′s Best Super Bowl Concert Ever at 9 p.m.
Meanwhile, in addition to more hit singles from their album California 37 — “Drive By” and “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” have already gone platinum or better, the Ashley Monroe duet “Bruises” is climbing the country chart — Train’s Save Me, San Francisco Wine Company is issuing a new varietal.
Soon taking its place on the shelf next to Drops of Jupiter California Red and Calling All Angels Chardonnay will be the Soul Sister Pinot Noir. Proceeds from sales go to Family House, sheltering families of children with life-threatening diseases seeking treatment at nearby UC San Francisco.
