Chris Tomlin is one of only four Christian music stars to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart.

It isn’t often that a contemporary Christian artist lands atop the Billboard albums chart, let alone debuts at pole position. But that’s the rare feat pulled off this week by Chris Tomlin, whose new album Burning Lights sold 72,000 copies to nab the No. 1 spot, an achievement eked out by only three others before him.

It’s also the first time the 40-year-old Texan, who’s regularly found at Passion City Church in Atlanta, has risen to such heights. That success comes a year after nabbing his first Grammy after several nominations via seventh disc And If Our God Is for Us …, which won for best contemporary Christian music album. (He’s up for another prize at next month’s ceremony, his “White Flag” vying for best contemporary Christian music song.)

Tomlin’s popularity continues to grow — so it’s no surprise that he will play one of the biggest venues in Southern California when he arrives April 27 to headline Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine.

Friend and Passion founder Louie Giglio also will appear, as will Sparrow Records artist and Dove Award winner Kari Jobe. Tickets, $19-$39, are on sale now.
