Tribute bands come a dime a dozen these days, and like all struggling musicians they ape to make enough bananas to keep a hut over their heads.
But next weekend eight of them will join forces to help give a little to people facing a great deal more grief than whether they can afford another wig or pair of spandex pants.
Our Town for Newtown, a benefit concert conceived in the wake of the horrifying Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, was initially staged Jan. 6 at the Boulder Station Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Now an O.C. edition has been slated for Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. at City National Grove of Anaheim, featuring Floyd FX (a Pink Floyd salute), Space Oddity (a Bowie homage), Pyromania (Def Leppard), Queen Nation (that’s an easy one), Lights (reviving Journey), Ultimate Stones, Zeppelin USA and everyone’s favorite Beatles facsimile, the Fab Four.
Tickets are on sale now, though only at the Grove box office, where $20 is the minimum donation. Further monetary offers will be accepted inside the venue or online at the official site for the Maddux Foundation, an extension of United Way’s Sandy Hook Fund. All proceeds will go toward grieving families and the rebuilding of the Newtown community.
The Fab Four, by the way, also just announced a proper performance at the Grove on April 20, $30-$38.50. And one more new show there: Nerdist Podcast Live with Chris Hardwick, Jonah Ray and Matt Mira. Both of those go on sale Friday, Jan. 11, at noon.
